D7’s First Little Free Library
You’ve heard the expression – if you build it they will come – well this is a story about a group of students and teachers at Houston Elementary School who took on a building project that’s promoting literacy in their school and community, and it also reflects the work our District is doing through 7Reads.
A select group of 4 and 5th graders along with kindergarten teacher Mrs. Ashley Griffith and Mr. Will Conley from district operations staff teamed up with some amazing ladies from Altrusa and our friends at Lowes to help build a Little Free Library. Little Free Library is a non-profit organization that supports the worldwide movement to offer free books that are literally housed in small containers to members of the local community. These small pop-up libraries are meant to encourage reading and are built and maintained solely by volunteers, who with a simple gesture are making big things happen.
We salute the construction crew of Emmanuel Gonzalez, Jessica Gonzalez, Daniel Greer, Rachel Greer, Erik Knight, Rodney Littlejohn, Jazlyn Montgomery, Paul Quirola. Bobby Randall, Hanna Sizemore, and Lily Smith for building District 7’s first Little Free Library which will be erected in front of Houston Elementary for all to enjoy. Now all you have to do is take a book and bring a book.
