Deputy Superintendent Terry Pruitt Honored by SCASA
Dr. Terry Pruitt will wear a new title for the coming academic year after being named today as the 2017 South Carolina District Level Administrator of the Year. Pruitt, who serves as the Deputy Superintendent, was honored this week by SCASA.
Pointing to a number of District initiatives that Dr. Pruitt has helped develop and coordinate, SCASA commended the D7 administrator for leveraging new ideas to advance student outcomes. More specifically, the organization praised Pruitt’s involvement with The Viking Early College, the curricular advances at the Early Learning Center at Park Hills and the gains being made in early childhood education on the Northside of Spartanburg. SCASA also recognized Pruitt for leading the charge in District 7 to ensure that local educators have more opportunity for professional development.
Announcing the news in Columbia on Thursday, May 4, Elizabeth “Beth” A. Phibbs, Executive Director of SCASA, said, “Dr. Terry Pruitt is well respected in our state and is the consummate professional. He has done a tremendous job in Spartanburg School District 7 and has been integral in the success of District 7’s 1:1 technology program. We are delighted that he has been chosen for this honor.”
Dr. Russell W. Booker, Superintendent of Spartanburg School District 7 echoed SCASA’s praise and lauded Pruitt for his boundless passion for education. “Terry has a reputation for being our greatest cheerleader, for believing that we can do anything we set our minds to and for motivating everyone around him to be a part of the District’s success.” Booker also saluted his colleague Dr. Burke Royster, the Superintendent of Greenville County Schools, who was named today as the 2018 South Carolina Superintendent of the Year.
Dr. Terry Pruitt began his career as a band director in South Carolina’s Bamberg District One. He then rose through the ranks as an assistant principal and principal in Hampton District One. After receiving his doctorate in 2003, he became the Superintendent of Hampton District One Schools. In the districts where Pruitt has worked his schools have received accolades as Palmetto Gold and Silver award winners, Red Carpet Winners and EOC Showcase schools. Among Dr. Pruitt’s many honors are Rotarian of the Year, Inez Tenenbaum School Leadership Award, American Cancer Society’s Superintendent of the Year for Region 3, and SCASA’s William B. Harley Administrator of the Year.
The South Carolina Association of School Administrators is the professional organization for more than 3,000 educational leaders in South Carolina, which includes superintendents, principals, assistant principals, aspiring school leaders and district office personnel. From professional development opportunities and research, to publications and legislative advocacy, SCASA’s focus is to support school leaders in providing the best possible education for South Carolina’s young people. As a state affiliate of three national associations for school leaders, SCASA also works on the national level.

“Dr. Terry Pruitt joined his school district nine years ago and has since infused the school district with exciting programs and stellar leadership. He can be described as the educational leader who sets the standard for human kindness and the welfare of others. He has consistently served at the state level as an active member of the Instructional Leaders Roundtable Executive Committee. Most recently, he has served as the president of the Instructional Leaders affiliate. He also assisted with providing entertainment for our foundation’s Finding Our Corner Sky Gala.”
