Dr. Sonia Leverette Named Asst. Supt. of Students Services
District Seven is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sonia Cunningham Leverette, as Assistant Superintendent of Student Services. Dr. Leverette will assume responsibility for leading a comprehensive student services program across the school district, including outreach to students, families, and the community. As a member of the superintendent’s senior leadership team, she will serve as the district’s primary contact regarding all student services matters.
Dr. Leverette is a veteran educator with over 24 years of professional experience. Prior to accepting the position with D7, Dr. Leverette served as the Assistant Superintendent focusing on Student Services in Anderson School District 5. She also served as the district’s Director for Personnel from 2004-2011. Dr. Leverette began her career as a secondary English teacher and has worked in administration for 14 years. In addition to her duties in K-12 education, Dr. Leverette serves as an adjunct professor at Anderson University. Dr. Leverette is a recent graduate of the SC Department of Education’s Tapping Executive Educators program. She is an active member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She has been described as an educator who is admired and respected for “her quiet spirit and effectiveness at handling situations with strength and grace.”
Dr. Russell Booker, Superintendent, commented, “Sonia is a perfect fit for the District 7 family. She is a values-based leader who is well respected throughout the state. She has proven herself to be a person of high integrity, loyalty, and reliability. She has a heart for children and will take our student services department to new heights. She has extensive experience in the area of student services, and her background will strengthen our district’s goal of enhancing the hope, engagement, and well-being of our students. I am thrilled to have her joining our senior leadership team.”
A lifelong resident of South Carolina, Dr. Leverette is a 1991 graduate of Clemson University, where she earned an undergraduate and graduate degree in Secondary Education (English). In 2004 she completed her doctoral studies at South Carolina State University with a degree in Educational Leadership. Dr. Leverette and her husband Barry have two children, ages 21 and 19. Their daughter Jasmine, attends Georgia State University and their son, Bryant, will be a sophomore at Coastal Carolina University. Mr. Levertte is employed with the US Postal System and is a member of the clergy. Dr. Leverette will begin her duties on July 20, 2015.
