Spring Signing Day
Five Spartanburg High School athletes - Spencer Ashby,Garrett Scharff, Spencer Brown,Arpit Rana, and Omar Williams - made decisions yesterday when they committed to the college and/or university where they wanted to continue their academic and athletic training.
Spencer Ashby a five-year letter swimmer for the Vikings will continue his swimming career at Lenoir-Rhyne College. Spencer’s achievements include being named All County, All-Region twice and as a senior All-State. This year Spencer was a member of the state champion 200-meter freestyle relay team and was also selected as Spartanburg High School’s Wendy Heisman Award Winner.
Garrett Scharff, this year’s team captain of the Viking soccer team and four-year letterman, has accepted a scholarship to play soccer next year at Oxford College of Emory University. This season Garrett has had 10 goals and 20 assists. This past year he was selected to the state team in the Olympic Development Program and went to the University of Alabama to compete against other state teams in the southeast.
For the last three years and 11 months, no tennis program in the state of South Carolina and maybe not in the entire U.S. has dominated tennis the way the Spartanburg Vikings boys’ program has. To this date, our boys tennis program has an unprecedented 82 match winning streak that is, “no pun intended”, unmatched! They have won three consecutive 4A state championships and two consecutive national high school championships by way of the Deco-Turf National Invitational, and are in hot pursuit of the first ever 5A state championship in the coming weeks. This incredible success is a tribute to the excellent players and the families and coaches who have dedicated so much time and energy to their development. Chambers Easterling made his commitment to play at Clemson University this fall and now three more of the team’s members have made their selections known. Spencer Brown, a four-year letterman, has signed to play at Appalachian State University. His career match record for the regular season and playoffs is 31wins and 8 losses. He has been honored three times as All-Region, two times as All-State and finished in the top three in his last state singles appearance.
Arpit Rana, also a four-year letterman, will attend Centre College. He has a career match record of 55 wins and 1 loss, and was honored as a junior as an All-Region selection.
Omar Williams, six-year letter winner, has made his commitment to play tennis at Wofford College. He has obtained to this date a phenomenal career match record of 102 wins and only 1 loss. Omar is a six-time All-Region selection and a two-time All-State selection by virtue of his top five finishes in the state individual tournament.
One more stat for these young men we believe is important - 4.57, 4.27,4.47, 4.30 and 4.34 - these are their GPAs. Spencer’s, Garrett’s, Spencer’s, Arpit’s and Omar’s stellar grades tell us as much about their dedication as their sports accolades and attest that each institution of higher learning will be getting a great player, a hard worker, and a fine young man who will represent District 7 and SHS in a positive and respectable way.
We congratulate them all and look forward to their future success.
