Yesterday, as March and Women's History Month came to a close, students in our beginning ESL class selected notable women from history and presented the information to their peers. Oral presentations can provide ESL students with several benefits, including improved speaking skills, increased confidence, and opportunities to practice listening, reading, and writing. What a fantastic way to end the month at Spartanburg County Adult Education!

In honor of International Women's Day we would like to recognize two of our most recent GED grads! Both women attended our site in Boiling Springs.
TJ Habenicht, top left, plans to enroll in the Dental Assistant program at Spartanburg Community College.
Iryna Redko, bottom right, began her education with Spartanburg County Adult Education in the ESL (English as a Second Language) program and went on to obtain her GED. She will be working toward her Associate of Science degree from Spartanburg Community College and then hopes to transfer to obtain her 4-year degree.

Spartanburg School District 7 Closure Announcement – Wednesday, March 5, 2025
Due to the strong wind advisory in effect from 4 AM to 7 PM by the National Weather Service, Spartanburg District 7 schools will be closed on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Forecasts indicate sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. In accordance with state safety regulations, school bus operations must be suspended when gusts exceed 45 mph, making travel unsafe for our students and staff.
Unlike other weather-related closures earlier this year, this will not be an eLearning day, as we have exhausted our allotted eLearning days for the year.
The safety of our students, staff, and families remains our top priority. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate this weather-related closure. Please take all necessary precautions, stay safe, and look out for one another. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Thursday.

Today we shine a spotlight on Victor J. Glover. Glover is a Navy captain and the first African American to have spent extended time on the International Space Station. He is slated for another historic undertaking in 2026 — piloting the Orion space capsule as part of NASA's Artemis II mission to circle the moon. If successful, he will be the first person of color to fly beyond Low Earth Orbit.
Three of his tips for being successful in life:
-Be resilient because your dreams don’t live in your comfort zone
-Being a lifelong learner is about learning in and out of the classroom
-Be a good teammate because we all share this one spaceship, Earth

Please help us congratulate some of our most recent GED Grads! Rickey Byrnside (top right) will be attending Spartanburg Community College and studying Nursing. Audrey Gagne (middle left) will be attending Greenville Tech and continuing her education in Business Management. Mackenzie Nesbitt (bottom right) will be studying Culinary Arts at Spartanburg Community College. Two other graduates (not pictured) will be furthering their education at SCC. Tanesha "Queen" Lewis will be studying Business Management and Iryna Polishchuk hopes to attain her Associate of Arts degree.

This week we highlight Rita F. Pierson. She was an educator, counselor, testing coordinator, and assistant principal. In each of these roles, she brought a special energy to the role -- a desire to get to know her students, show them how much they matter, and support them in their growth, even if it was modest. Pierson conducted professional development workshops and seminars for thousands of educators. Focusing on the students who are too often under-served, she lectured on topics like “Helping Under-Resourced Learners,” “Meeting the Educational Needs of African American Boys" and "Engage and Graduate Your Secondary Students: Preventing Dropouts." Pierson passed away in June 2013. Her TED Talk, "Every kid needs a champion", has over 16 million views

This week we highlight Maya Angelou. Angelou was an American author, poet, civil rights activist, director, and performer. She was a prominent figure in the arts and a leader in the fight for civil rights. Her work is known for its insights into the Black experience and for its celebration of survival and dignity. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou's 1969 memoir, was the first nonfiction bestseller by a Black woman. She was the first Black woman to write a screenplay for a major movie. Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993. Maya Angelou passed away in 2014, leaving behind a legacy that will live for ages.

Across District 7, our schools are celebrating Black History Month throughout February. Studying important historical and modern-day Black figures and their contributions inspires a wide variety of learning opportunities, such as hosting a wax museum, hearing from guest speakers, creating new inventions, making artwork, school-wide assemblies and spirit days, creating book-inspired quilts, decorating classroom doors, and much more.
Check out our schools’ social media pages for individual lists of events and photos of our students in action throughout the month!

Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans. Each week in February we will shine a spotlight on one of these great individuals. This week we highlight Frank Morrison, acclaimed children's book illustrator and graffiti artist. Morrison strives to capture people as they are, translating emotions through his paintings and leaving a memoir of our life and times today. His work depicts African American livelihood in a way that is both familiar and comforting to those who often feel histories have been forgotten and culture has been usurped. Continuing to celebrate the teacher that changed his life by insisting he visit his first art museum, Morrison signs each of his works TTG (“Thanks to God”) to also show his gratitude for God’s plan in positioning him where he is today. “I know where I am is not by accident. I want to just be able to continue doing what I do.”

It is National School Counseling Week! National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. We are so thankful for our College and Career Navigator, Mrs. Elyse Miller, who serves all our 6 sites across the county!

District 7 will hold an eLearning day on Wednesday, January 22 due to winter weather conditions. The National Weather Service has issued both a "Winter Weather Advisory" and a "Severe Weather Advisory" for Spartanburg County, calling for wind chill as low as -7 for tomorrow morning and the possibility of continued snowfall. Unsafe road conditions are expected, as temperatures are projected to remain below freezing throughout tomorrow.
Teachers will communicate details regarding eLearning assignments and additional information about District 7’s eLearning guidelines can be found at spartanburg7.org/eLearning.
Thank you for your understanding, as safety is always our highest priority.

Spartanburg County Adult Education will be closed Monday, January 20 to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Classes will resume Tuesday, January 21, and our next GED registration will be Monday, January 27.

District 7 schools will operate on regular schedule on Tuesday, January 14.
We hope our D7 Family is having a great to start to the week!

District 7 will operate on a two-hour delay on Monday, January 13.
Our safety team spent the day assessing road conditions, and found many icy patches persist on back roads. These conditions could create a safety risk for our buses, student drivers, and staff traveling in those areas. A two-hour delay will allow daylight to improve visibility and temperatures time to rise.
Two-Hour Delay Times:
A two-hour delay means everything shifts back two hours from its normal time. For example, if your bus normally arrives at 6:30 AM, it should arrive at approximately 8:30 AM. The tardy bell for each school will be exactly two hours later than that school’s tardy bell on a regular school day.
Thank you for your patience and understanding, as safety is always our top priority.

Due to the impending weather, our GED registration on January 10 at The Bethlehem Center has been rescheduled to Tuesday, January 14 at 9:00 AM. Stay safe and give us a call if you have any questions! 864-594-4428
