PYP Transdisciplinary Units of Study (Themes)

Each PYP school collaboratively develops a Program of Inquiry (POI) to reflect the unique aspects of the schools teaching and learning community. The POI is organized by themes:

  • Who we are- August and September

  • Where we are in place and time- October

  • How we express ourselves – November and December

  • How the world works- January

  • How we organize ourselves- February and March

  • Sharing the planet- April and May

These transdisciplinary themes provide children with authentic learning experiences that are not confined to the boundaries of traditional subjects. Although subjects play an important role in learning, PYP learners explore real-world problems by going beyond subject boundaries. Students have opportunities to reflect on the significance of their learning to take meaningful action in their community and the world. At every grade level, students will explore aspects of each of the six themes.
