Happy Thanksgiving, D7 Family!
This has been quite a school year so far – while wonderful things are happening for our students every day, we have also had unexpected challenges from Hurricane Helene's impact on our school year. There is a silver lining in all things, however, and the good that came from the storm was how it brought our community together to care for and support one another. Our students, staff, and families played a big role in the effort, and that makes me especially proud and grateful for everyone this Thanksgiving.
Over the past several days, our schools have been buzzing with holiday excitement and activities. From a Thanksgiving meal drive at our high school where students packed more than 200 grocery bags to help families in need celebrate a meal together, to creative learning assignments inspired by turkeys and holiday traditions, to special menus in our cafeterias and class parties with family members, they are all a reminder of what makes this community so special.
From all of us in District 7, please know we are truly thankful for each of you and the support you give to our schools every day. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and joyful Thanksgiving!

Jury deliberations in a New York City murder trial are complicated by a single member whose cautious skepticism forces them to carefully consider all evidence before delivering their verdict…
As the third annual Viking Theatre Company Fall play, 12 Angry Jurors connects with the social studies curriculum to highlight the roles, responsibilities, and overall ethics of jurors in the American judicial system. Adapted from the classic motion picture 12 Angry Men, this legal drama challenges audiences - and particularly students - with the moral and ethical questions facing the characters, and reflects the kinds of duties students may perform when serving jury duty as citizens in our community.
12 Angry Jurors evening performances are Wednesday, November 13; Thursday, November 14; and Saturday, November 16 at 7 PM in the District 7 Fine Arts Center at Spartanburg High School with a matinee performance on Sunday, November 17 at 2 PM. Tickets are general admission and sold at the door: $5 adults/$1 students.

Watch our NEW Student-Created SHS Newscast!
Spartanburg High School’s all-new Viking News broadcast launched this year and is receiving rave reviews for its first two episodes. It was conceived by art and photography teacher Crissy Rennie, who is in her third year at SHS, as a way to boost school spirit and help students develop valuable skills.
Ms. Rennie has fond memories of her own time as editor and executive producer of Wando High School’s news team, Tribe Talk. “We competed around the state and I remember students being super excited when our episode aired. When I came to SHS and noticed we didn't have a news show, I brought the idea to Mr. Adam Babcock and he was all for it.”
The Viking News team started small with their first episode but attracted interest and grew to include more students for its second episode, released in October. The crew meets to plan each episode before school once per month, then heads out to capture the stories. They check in with Ms. Rennie throughout each week as the episodes are put together for publishing. In their October installment, several SHS students share facts about their native countries for Hispanic Heritage Month, they give athletic updates, provide tips to students for writing professional email messages, cover senior college day, ask a lot of Vikings about their favorite Halloween movies, and end with a poignant introduction to the beloved custodial team at SHS.
As the news show grows, Ms. Rennie envisions the students’ honing their skills and eventually beginning to edit their own stories. She also envisions the possibility of a future Media Technology/Broadcast Journalism class that would expand the news team while preparing students for careers in the field. For now, the group is focusing on telling stories that create connections and deepen our Viking’s understanding of one another.

There will be no athletics or other after-school activities until further notice, but conditions will be assessed daily to determine when these might resume. We will continue to share information as soon as it is available.
You are constantly on our hearts and minds as our community works to recover from Helene. District 7 is fortunate to have avoided major damage at our schools, although there is much cleanup to be done and we still await power to be restored at the majority of our facilities. Our teams have done tremendous work assessing conditions and making plans to reopen once we are able to do so.
Please continue to take great care as there are many hazards that remain across our community. We miss our students, teachers and staff as well as our broader District 7 Family!
UPDATE ON SCHOOL CLOSURES FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY:
Due to the impact and damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene, District 7 will be CLOSED on Monday and Tuesday. We understand this is a challenging time for our community, as many are without power and mobile device service. There will be no e-Learning expectations for Monday or Tuesday. As always, our priority is the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and their families.
Our hearts and best wishes are with everyone who is impacted by the storm, and we are committed to working together to restore our community. Please stay safe!

After-School Activities Canceled and eLearning Day Announced for Friday
In light of the potential impact from Hurricane Helene, we are taking proactive measures to prioritize the safety of our students, staff and families. District 7 will hold a regular school day on Thursday but has canceled all after-school and evening activities for Thursday. We will also hold an eLearning Day on Friday, September 27. Cherokee County will continue to monitor the storm's timing and impact in hopes that our Viking football team will still travel to compete in Gaffney Friday night. All other after-school programs and activities for District 7 are canceled for both Thursday and Friday.
Teachers will communicate with students on Thursday regarding any eLearning assignments for Friday. More information on District 7’s eLearning procedures is available at spartanburg7.org/elearning.
The National Weather Service is forecasting strong winds, flooding, and severe weather conditions as this storm moves through our area. As a reminder, SC Bus Safety Regulations restrict the operation of school buses if sustained winds reach 30 mph or gusts of 40 mph. We will continue to monitor this storm and communicate any updates. Thank you for your understanding, as safety is always our top priority!

The unofficial result of the referendum vote is 73% YES – Thank you, Spartanburg!
“Today, residents of District 7 chose to create a brighter future for students, teachers, staff, and families. They chose to invest in a thriving community by ensuring District 7’s long-standing commitment to providing excellence in education continues. And for that, we are deeply grateful,” said Superintendent Jeff Stevens.
“It has been incredibly rewarding to meet with District 7 residents about these projects through our community info meetings over the summer. Our conversations reflected the shared commitment to the future of our children and schools that has long been a hallmark of this community. Investing in these developments will not only enhance our educational facilities and our students’ learning experience, it will also help fill a critical need for lower-cost childcare to ensure education remains a viable and rewarding career for teachers and staff. This is about securing a brighter future for our students and creating an environment where our educators can thrive both professionally and personally. Spartanburg answered the call to make it all possible – thank you and let’s GO!”
